A day hike is a fun way to spend time with friends and family, or even by yourself, exploring nature.
Whether you choose to trek deep into the mountains or stay closer to town, there are plenty of options; many state and national parks, as well as national forest area, have extensive trail networks.
Consider how far you expect to hike, how remote the site is, and what the weather prediction has in store for you when planning a day hike.
The more clothing, gear, food, and water you will need, the longer and/or more remote the trip is and the more adverse the weather could be.
So before you head out for a day in nature these items should be on your hiking checklist:
- Hiking backpack
- Weather-appropriate clothing (think moisture-wicking and layers)
- Hiking boots or shoes
- Plenty of food
- Plenty of water
- Navigation tools such as a map and compass
- First-aid kit
- Knife or multi-tool
- Sun protection - hat & sunscreen
- Fire
With these items you are sure to be prepared for any situation!
